ABOUT EACDays in Georgia

The European Artistic Crafts Days (Journées Européennes des Métiers d’Art, JEMA / EACD) is the largest craft sector event in Europe, taking place for the sixteenth time this year. European Artistic Crafts Days is primarily aimed at developing the field and raising awareness in Europe that brings together the community, media and local leadership. European Artistic Crafts Days was founded in 2002 in France in the format of the Biennale. The event was originally designed to celebrate the importance and diversity of France’s intangible cultural heritage. It was founded by the French Savoire-Faire Institute (Institut National des Métiers d’Art, INMA) and is open to the public as well as for exhibitions, conferences and other activities.

European Artistic Crafts Days became an annual event in 2011 and by 2012 covered 15-20 European partner countries. Georgia joins the week for the first time in 2022 and the event will be coordinated by Georgian Arts and Culture Center and Traditional Heritage Crafts Association. The sixteenth week of European Artistic Crafts Days will take place from March 28 to April 3, 2022. Georgian handicrafts masters and cultural organizations will join the Georgian program of the week. 2022 theme of the week is unity, with the slogan "Our hands in unison".

Georgian National Museum perpetuates an enduring museum tradition in Georgia. Georgian State Silk Museum, established in 1887, is one of the oldest among the few sericulture (silk) museums worldwide. The museum displays the rich collection of cocoons from different countries, industrial and handicraft textiles, mulberry trees, natural and chemical dyes, collection of old photographs about sericulture and many more. Visitors will be offered a weaving Master Class on a Jacquard loom.

Dating from the 1850s, the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts building is one of the most outstanding heritage sites in Tbilisi. Defined by an eclectic mix of European and oriental architectural and artistic styles, this landmark building is best known for the so-called Mirror Halls, the sumptuous adornment of which, executed by Qajar artists invited from Iran, are reminiscent of the decoration of oriental palaces.

The workshop "Pesvebi" was established in 2006, the main purpose of its establishment was to restore and develop a traditional Georgian rug sewing, based on historical ethnographic sources. The members of the group own a rug weaving technique. Wool thread is dyed in natural dyes. The same technique is used to create bags and various accessories, which are decorated with natural leather.
